Davenport, who won her last Grand Slam crown more than five years ago, defeated French third seed Amelie Mauresmo 6-7 (5-7), 7-6 (7-4), 6-4 after returning to finish the final two games of a contest whose total time was slightly over three hours.
The pair were forced off court Thursday by evening rain with Davenport up 5-3 in the third set trailing 0-15.
Upon resumption, the French player held to love to make it 4-5, but fell victim to a Davenport love game as the Californian claimed victory on the first of three match points.
Davenport, who won the second of three Grand Slam titles here in 1999, continued her domination of Mauresmo, who upheld her reputation of nerves at high-pressure moments.
The victory was the ninth for Davenport against three defeats against Mauresmo; she has won their last eight matches.
"This is pretty amazing, I haven't thought about the final yet," Davenport said after her five minutes on court to conclude. "There was a lot of stress and nerves over the last 24 hours."
The match didn't start for more than four hours Thursday due to drizzle, and was ended for the night due to a downpour leaving Davenport on the brink of a win.
"This is amazing," said the 29-year-old, who a year ago was considering retirement. I'm happy I came through in really tough conditions.
"We were only out there a few minutes, but I had all the momentum when the rain came. But I was able to pull it out with a good service game today."
Williams booked her place in the final of the event she won in 2000 and 2001, reaching her fifth Wimbledon final at the expense of holder Maria Sharapova 7-6 (7-2), 6-1 on Thursday.
