Williams stuns Sharapova in Wimbledon semi-final

London - Venus Williams dethroned reigning champion Maria Sharapova with a shock 7-6 (7-2), 6-1 upset on a rainy Thursday to reach her fifth career final at the Wimbledon Championships. The 14th seed, who won the trophy in 2000 and 2001, stopped the 22-match grass win streak of the Russian teenaged holder in one hour, 42 minutes under grey threatening skies. It was the best Grand Slam showing for the 25-year-old American since losing the 2003 final to her sister Venus. Sharapova came in without the loss of a set. "I took it one match at a time," said Williams, a former world number 1 who has fallen on hard times in the game. "I wasn't sure today if we were even going to get to play." The match, whose start was delayed by more than four hours, featured high drama, with Williams missing on a match point in the second set and reaching her second 25 minutes later before finally closing out victory. © dpa - Deutsche Presse-Agentur
