London - Holder Maria Sharapova put in a patchy performance Saturday, scraping past Slovenian Katarina Srebotnik 6-2, 6-4 to reach the second week of the Wimbledon Championships.

The second-seeded Russian teenager came into the match against the world number 57 Srebotnik having dropped just five games in two matches.

But her form showed a need for improvement as she heads towards the business end of her Grand Slam title defence, with six games lost against the 24-year-old challenger playing here for the seventh time.

Sharapova had her troubles as she tried to close out the win on a cloudy but dry day as Srebotnik saved two match points in the ninth game of the second set.

Sharapova had to salvage a break point as she served for victory a game later, finally getting through on her third try with a forehand winner to the corner.

The 18-year-old won her 39th match this season, with just six defeats.

French Open finalist Mary Pierce, seeded 12th, joined Sharapova in the fourth round with a win over Serbian teenager Ana Ivanovic 6-1, 6-4.

Czech Kveta Peschke put out 1994 Wimbledon winner Conchita Martinez of Spain 6-4, 6-1.
