Queen provides tents with a view for Olympic visitors in royal park
Feb 15, 2012, 15:21 GMT
London - Sections of Windsor Great Park, the traditional private hunting ground for Britain's kings and queens, will be turned into a campsite for visitors to this summer's Olympic Games.
Tents, caravans and motor homes will all be welcome to use the nearly 300 slots provided at a cost of 40 pounds (62 dollars) a night, and a minimum three night stay.
The interest in bookings has already been 'phenomenal,' Jon Dale, manager of the campsite, told Wednesday's Daily Telegraph.
With nearby hotels charging five times as much, the slots were popular.
'We're expecting it to sell out in double-quick time,' said Dale. 'It's a campsite right at the heart of British royalty.'
The 286 pitches run along the park's Long Walk, a majestic avenue of trees, from where occupants have a view of the famous round tower of Windsor Castle, just south-west of London.
They will also benefit from an on-site catering team selling products from the royal farms estate and be able to visit open air theatre events in the grounds.
A spokesman for the Crown Estate said the organization was 'delighted' to work with the camping club to provide the 'unique campsite' which is near to the Olympic venue for rowing, flat water canoeing and kayaking events.
