German Olympics chief hopes team can match Beijing on London medals
Dec 27, 2011, 10:20 GMT
Berlin - Germany's Olympic team cannot expect to land in the top four in the medals standings at the 2012 London Games, Thomas Bach, the head of the nation's Olympic movement, said.
If Germany could match its results in Beijing in 2008 it would be 'an outstanding success,' Bach told Bild daily published Tuesday.
Bach, president of the Germany Olympic Sports Association DOSB and an International Olympic Committee vice-president, promised an overall review of German performance sport after the Games.
Germany has not been in the top four in the medals standings since the 1996 Atlanta Olympics when it was third.
At the London Games from July 27 to August 12, Bach sees China, the United States and Russia ahead in the medals standings, with Britain, in view of home advantage, fourth.
'Behind them are a few nations battling for fifth place including us,' he said.
