Federer, Hingis kill idea for Olympic dream doubles team

Dec 22, 2011, 3:31 GMT

Zurich - The 2012 Olympic pairing that was never meant to be has been quietly buried, with Roger Federer's coach Severin Luthi confirming that his client and former great Martina Hingis have dropped plans for a London Olympic mixed doubles dream team.

'Martina and Roger talked together and decided that they will not compete in mixed doubles,' Luthi told Swiss press.

The topic had been hot for half year - but with both Hingis and Federer somewhat cool to the prospect. Hingis, who retired for a second time in 2007 rather than fight a positive drug test, would have had to jump through numerous bureaucratic hoops to have even been allowed to form the potential all-star partnership.

Federer was always reluctant to expand upon the possibility, saying that he had not actually spoken to Hingis about the chances of making it happen this coming summer. It finally died a natural death, with Luthi giving the confirmation.

Federer, on a roll after winning his last three events of 2011, has plenty on his plate for 2012.

At the Games, he and Stanislas Wawrinka are planning to defend their gold medal from Beijing and the Swiss would also love to add another record to his career by a gold showing in singles.
