Beijing silver medallists knocked out
Dec 2, 2011, 23:12 GMT
Tangiers, Morocco - Beijing football silver medallists Nigeria were on Friday eliminated from the 2012 Olympics despite a 4-1 victory against Algeria.
As Senegal won their final group game at the African under-23 champions against the hosts Morocco 1-0, the Dream Team failed to advance to the semi-finals.
Spanish-based Raheem Lawal scored a hat-trick for Nigeria in their emphatic 4-1 victory, but the 1996 champions failed to do enough in their first two matches to go through.
Senegal and Morocco topped Group A with six points and went through, while Algeria and Nigeria both finished on three points.
Egypt, Gabon, Ivory Coast and South Africa will fight it out for the two other semi-final places on Saturday in their Group B matches.
The top three finishers from the championship qualify directly for the London Games, while the fourth-placed team will face an Asian team in a play-off.
