LEAD: DOSB: Munich won't bid for 2022 Olympics

Dec 2, 2011, 16:32 GMT

Berlin - Munich should not submit another bid to host the 2022 Winter Olympics, according to a motion by the German Olympic Committee (DOSB) leadership.

The DOSB is to present the recommendation to its annual members' meeting in Berlin for approval on Saturday.

The DOSB said Munich should refrain from another bid right now but that it 'wants Olympic Games in Germany' in the future, possibly in 2026.

'We are ready for a new bid when the conditions are right and there is a valid reason to believe in success,' the DOSB said.

Munich, which hosted the Summer Games in 1972, lost the bid for the 2018 Games against Pyeongchang, South Korea, in a ballot by the International Olympic Committee in July.

The bid process was made difficult by opposition from locals and environmental groups, mainly at the proposed ski venue of Garmisch-Partenkirchen.

DOSB president Thomas Bach, who is also an IOC vice-president, said recently that Munich and Garmisch were capable of staging Olympics, but 'the question is, when.'

Munich major Christian Ude also said that 'you must study whether the chances in 2022 are really bigger than for 2018, or even better in 2026.'

The bid process for 2022 starts in 2015 at around the same time federal elections in Germany and a ballot in the state of Bavaria as well, which could make the issue of financial guarantees more difficult.

In addition, a setback could occur if the 2020 Summer Olympics are awarded to a European city, which could make the IOC reluctant to chose Europe again for 2022.

Bidding for 2026 doesn't start until 2019 under the current format.
