London - Former England captain Stuart Pearce was named on Thursday as the coach of the Great Britain football team at next summer's 2012 Olympics.
The England under-21 coach was widely expected to get the role and will have the task of picking a team from the combined nations of England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.
'I was fortunate to be part of Euro '96, so I know how special it can be to play for your country on home soil at a major tournament,' Pearce said.
'I'm sure this group of players will relish being part of not only a huge tournament in this country, but a unique one competing together and representing the UK.'
England coach Hope Pearce will take the role in charge of the women's team.
'This is a historic moment for women's football. It will promote the sport, raise its profile and hopefully bring success.'
