Busan drops plans for 2020 Olympics bid
Jul 7, 2011, 8:55 GMT
Seoul - Busan, South Korea's largest port city, has dropped plans to bid for the 2020 Summer Olympics after Pyeongchang won the right to host the 2018 Winter Games.
'We will abandon our bid for the 2020 Summer Olympics,' the city's mayor, Hur Nam Sik, was quoted Thursday as saying by Yonhap news agency.
Pyeongchang was chosen ahead of Munich and Annecy for the 2018 Winter Games by the International Olympic Committee in Durban Wednesday.
Officials in Busan, which hosted the 2002 Asian Games, feel the IOC is unlikely to award South Korea two Olympics within such a short time. The capital Seoul hosted the 1988 Summer Olympics.
Cities interested in hosting the 2020 Games must register by September 1. Rome, Madrid and Tokyo have been nominated by their Olympic committees, and several other cities have expressed an interest.
The 2012 Summer Olympics are in London and the 2016 Games in Rio de Janeiro.
