Olympic programme to be extended for Sochi
Jul 4, 2011, 21:01 GMT
Durban, South Africa - The president of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) Jacques Rogge announced on Monday that the programme for the 2014 Winter Olympic Games in Sochi would be extended by three disciplines.
The IOC executive decided on Monday that alpine skiing and snowboarding would see the introduction of slopestyle, while parallel slalom would be added to the snowboarding competition.
'Slopestyle is a very popular sport that is growing very fast,' Rogge said, adding that the sport had a promising future.
The Olympic Games in 2020 could also see the programme being extended. The IOC executive chose eight sports from a list of 12 that could be added in 2020.
Baseball, softball, karate, roller sports, sports climbing, squash, wakeboard and wushu have managed to overcome the first hurdle.
The IOC assembly in Buenos Aires in 2013 will put forward one of the sports to be considered for 2020.
