Cameroon and Ghana stunned in Olympic qualifiers

Apr 10, 2011, 12:57 GMT

Johannesburg - Cameroon, who in 2000 won the men's gold medal in the Olympic football tournament, were knocked-out by Tanzania in an African qualifier.

Tanzania managed to come from behind to win Saturday's second round game in Dar Es Salam 2-1 for a 3-3 aggregate score and then went on to win the penalty shoot-out 4-3.

Goals by Kigi Makas and Thomas Ulimwengu took the game into extra- time and penalties after Essengue Parfait had earlier given Cameroon the lead.

In the shoot-out, Juma Abdul scored the winning goal, which started widespread celebrations throughout the country.

In another shock Ghana, who won bronze in 1992, were knocked out by Sudan after managing no better than a 1-1 draw in Khartoum on Saturday and went out 2-1 on aggregate.

Sudan had stunned the Black Meteors 1-0 in Accra in the first-leg game and Ramadan Al Agab opened the scoring early on for the home side in the return leg.

Although Sadick Adams managed to level matters, the visitors failed to find the second goal they would have needed to go through.

'We are very happy to have crossed this hurdle into the next round. Our strategy was to score early in the game and we did just that,' Sudan coach Mohamed Muhideen said.

In Gaborone, Botswana came close to securing another upset as they beat Egypt 2-1, but went out 3-2 on aggregate.

Two goals by Bakang Moeng had leveled the aggregate score by the 50th minute, but in the 69th minute Moses Marwan scored with a header to see the Egyptians through to the next round.

Three African teams will qualify for the Olympics.
