Bach expects Olympic nod in Garmisch-Partenkirchen referendum
Mar 31, 2011, 10:09 GMT
Berlin - German Olympic supremo Thomas Bach expects residents of Garmisch-Partenkirchen to vote in favour of hosting Olympic ski events as part of the Munich 2018 Games in an upcoming referendum.
'I expect a convincing majority in favour of the Olympic Games,' Bach told the German Press Agency dpa on Thursday.
On Wednesday night, the Garmisch-Partenkirchen council accepted two referendums, one for and one against ski sports events in town, as proposed in Munich's bid for the 2018 Games.
The vote is set for May 8, less than two months before the International Olympic Committee elects the host city on July 6. Munich's rivals are Annecy of France and South Korea's Pyeongchang.
In Garmisch-Partenkirchen, a group of farmers and landowners are refusing to make their land available for the Games. The Bavarian government hopes that a settlement can be reached with the group.
