Feb 22, 2011, 15:13 GMT
London - The velodrome for the 2012 Olympics in London was officially opened on Tuesday, the first completed Olympic Park venue for the Games.
The 6,000-seat arena has a sweeping roof and organizers named the Siberian pine track the fastest in the world. The stadium cost 94 million pounds (152 million dollars).
The British home team hopes to win several medals there as track cycling was the best British sport 2008 in Beijing with seven golds.
Four-times Olympic champion Chris Hoy, who helped in the track design with his expertise, was among the first to test the oval on Tuesday.
Hoy said he 'can't wait' for the 2012 Games to come and organizing committee head Sebastian Coe spoke of 'a stunning venue built for champions.'
London's Olympic Park will be the heart of the Games. Venues still under construction include the 80,000-seat Olympics stadium and the aquatics centre.
