IOC: Olympics 2020 applicants to be named by September
Jan 13, 2011, 13:45 GMT
Lausanne, Switzerland - Cities interested in hosting the 2020 Summer Olympics must register by September 1 through their National Olympic Committees, the International Olympic Committee said on Thursday.
The IOC executive committee approved the 2020 bid timetable under which the IOC will send formal letters to all 205 NOCs by May inviting them to bid.
The bid process culminates in the election of the host city at the IOC Session in Buenos Aires on September 7, 2013.
First bid documents must be submitted by February 15, 2012, before the IOC executive committee selects the official candidates in May 2012. Official bid books have to be ready by January 2013, followed by visits of the IOC evaluation committee ahead of the deciding vote.
Under stricter rules, cities can only bid if they comply with World Anti-Doping Agency rules and the jurisdiction of the Court of Arbitration for Sport.
The 1960 Rome is said to be interested in 2020, with South Africa and a bid from Japan, Tokyo or possibly Hiroshima, also expected among others.
The 2012 Summer Olympics are in London and the 2016 edition in Rio de Janeiro.
