Cypress Mountain, Canada dpa) - Nicolien Sauerbreij of the Netherlands clinched gold in the women's parallel giant slalom in snowboarding at a rainy Cypress Mountains on Friday.
The 30-year-old, who was 12th in the event in Turin four years ago, bettered Russia's Ekaterina Ilyukhina by 0.23 seconds over the two runs in a hard-fought final on a bumpy course with poor visibility.
The two were neck-and-neck in the first run which the Russian just edged by 0.02 seconds.
World champion Marion Kreiner of Austria captured the bronze in the small final over Germany's Selina Joerg who fell during the first run and lost further ground in the second.
In the semi-final, Joerg was heading for a photo finish with Sauerbreij but fell shortly before the line.
Three Germans and three Austrians were in the final eight but in the end it was the Dutch and Russians fans braving the inclement weather who had most to celebrate.
