Dukurs, Williams lead at halfway mark (Roundup)
Feb 19, 2010, 5:52 GMT
Whistler, Canada - Martins Dukurs of Latvia and Amy Williams of Britain led the men's and women's skeleton competitions at the halfway mark Thursday at the 2010 Olympics.
Dukurs, hoping to win his nation's first winter Olympics gold, posted a two-run time of 1 minute 44.91 seconds, 0.26 seconds better than Jon Montgomery of Canada with Alexander Tretyakov of Russia another 0.58 seconds behind in third place.
Williams tops the women's standings after two heats with a two-run time of 1:47.96. Kerstin Szymkowiak of Germany is second, 0.30 seconds behind Williams. And 2006 Olympic bronze medalist Mellisa Hollingsworth of Canada trails by another 0.09 seconds in third place.
Japan's Nozomi Komuro was disqualified before the start of Thursday's women's competition because her sled did not have an official sticker. The control sticker was found to be missing in a standard check 35 minutes before the competition was to begin.
Sleds are checked by the FIBT 35 minutes before the start of competition. Komuro had been previously warned by the race jury about this issue, a statement said.
