Beijing - American Michael Phelps on Friday won his sixth gold medal at the Beijing Olympics as he took the men's 200-metre Individual Medley in the world record time of 1 minute 54.23 seconds.
As in the 400m IM, the silver went to Hungarian Laszlo Cseh, while Ryan Lochte, who 20 minutes earlier won gold in the men's 200m backstroke, took bronze.
Cseh's time of 1:56.52 beat Lochte by just one hundredth of a second.
Phelps also held the previous world record of 1:54.80 he established at the US trials last month.
Earlier in the week, Phelps broke the all-time record of nine Olympic gold medals overall, and now holds 12 gold medals as well as two bronze medals.
