US anti-abortionists stage sit-in in Tiananmen Square

Beijing - Three US anti-abortion campaigners staged a brief sit-in on the edge of Beijing's Tiananmen Square on Wednesday afternoon, state media said. 'Three American anti-abortionists staged a sit-in and shouted slogans outside the National Museum of China to the east of the Tiananmen Square,' the official Xinhua news agency said in a brief report. 'The two men and a woman were persuaded by police to leave about 30 minutes later,' the agency said. The protest followed the detention earlier on Wednesday of two US and two British citizens who staged a pro-Tibet protest near the Bird's Nest Olympic stadium in Beijing. The two British men scaled a 40-metre lighting post and unfurled a huge banner calling for a Tibet free from China's rule.
