Laval, QC - Pierre Turgeon announced his retirement Wednesday after 19 years in the NHL.
The 38-year-old Turgeon, who played for Colorado the past two seasons, was limited to just 17 games last year due to groin and calf injuries.
Turgeon, who was drafted with the first-overall pick by the Buffalo Sabres in 1987 Entry Draft, ranks 30th all-time with 515 goals, 27th with 812 assists and 27th with 1,327 points. He skated with Buffalo, the New York Islanders, Montreal, St. Louis, Dallas and Colorado during his career.
'It's with confidence that I'm going to begin this new chapter in my life,' said Turgeon in a news conference at the office of his agent, Bob Sauve. 'Hockey is a team sport and I admit my teammates will be greatly missed.'
The Rouyn, Quebec native won the Lady Byng Trophy for sportsmanship and gentlemanly conduct while playing for the New York Islanders in 1993 when he notched career highs in goals (58), assists (74) and points (132).
