Los Angeles, CA - The Los Angeles Kings named Dave Lewis as an assistant coach on Tuesday, and also signed a pair of players.
Lewis comes to LA from Boston, where he was Bruins head coach for the 2006-2007 season, compiling a 35-41-6 mark. Prior to then, he was head coach of the Detroit Red Wings from 2002 to 2004, associate coach with the Wings under Hall-of-Fame coach Scotty Bowman (1996-2002), and assistant coach (1988-96). He won three Stanley Cups during that span in 1997, 1998 and 2002.
'This is a perfect fit for our staff as we were interested in Dave taking a similar role with the Kings last summer before he accepted the head coaching job with Boston,' said Kings head coach Marc Crawford. 'Dave brings to our coaching staff and to our hockey club a great deal of success and a tremendous amount of experience.'
It is a homecoming of sorts for the 54-year-old Saskatchewan native. Lewis played for the Kings between 1980-83, serving as team captain for two seasons. In a 15-year NHL career, the steady defenseman registered 36 goals and 224 points in 1,008 games with the Islanders, Kings, Devils and Red Wings.
In a related move, the club promoted Jamie Kompon to assistant coach and director of amateur development.
The Kings made a move to bolster their net strength, inking goaltender Jean-Sebastien Aubin to a one-year contract. The 30-year-old played in 20 games last season with the Toronto Maple Leafs and posted a 3-5-2 record, with a 3.34 goals-against-average. He has a 75-77-15 record and a 2.91 GAA in 199 career NHL games with Pittsburgh and Toronto.
Los Angeles also inked restricted free agent defenseman Richard Petiot to a one-year deal. He spent last season with the Manchester Monarchs, the Kings' American Hockey League affiliate, and totaled two points.
