Sunrise, FL - The Florida Panthers agreed to a six-year contract extension with forward Stephen Weiss on Thursday.
Weiss, 24, posted career-highs in goals (20), assists (28), and points (48), and was the youngest player in team history to be named an alternate captain. The 5-foot-11, 190-pound forward recorded his first-career hat trick January 13 against the Washington Capitals, led the Panthers with 10 power-play goals and recorded his 100th career point February 1.
'Stephen is an important part of our core nucleus of offensive talent and we are pleased to have reached a long-term agreement with him,' said Florida general manager and head coach Jacques Martin. 'He posted career-best numbers last season and we look forward to his continued production and contributions to our organization.'
The Toronto native was the fourth-overall choice by the Panthers in the 2001 NHL draft. He has posted 48 goals and 121 points in 249 games over five NHL seasons.
