Uniondale, NY - The New York Islanders signed defenseman Andy Sutton to a three-year contract on Friday. Per club policy, terms of the deal were not disclosed.
'We're very pleased to bring Andy Sutton to Long Island on a long-term deal,' said Islanders general manager Garth Snow. 'He fits the personality of the team (head coach) Ted (Nolan) and I are putting together.'
Sutton, entering his 10th season in the NHL, scored two goals and added 14 assists in 55 games for the Atlanta Thrashers last season. A tall, rangy backliner specializing in shot-blocking, he has compiled 27 goals, 105 points and 785 penalty minutes in 432 career games with San Jose, Minnesota and Atlanta.
'Andy adds a little bit of everything both on offense and defense and we really like what he brings to the table,' said Nolan. 'He's a big guy who plays big and isn't afraid to do the dirty work.'
The 32-year-old Ontario native was selected as a free agent by San Jose in 1998 out of Michigan Tech.
