Guerin named Islanders' captain
Jul 10, 2007, 2:30 GMT
Uniondale, NY - The New York Islanders named forward Bill Guerin captain of the club for the 2007-2008 season on Monday.
'I'm completely surprised, but thrilled about this tremendous honor,' Guerin said. 'I want to thank the organization for the vote of confidence and I will not take this captaincy lightly.'
The 36-year-old forward becomes the 11th captain in franchise history, replacing the departed Alexei Yashin, who wore the 'C' since the start of the 2005-2006 season. He is the first American-born player to earn the honor in team history.
Guerin, who was signed to a two-year contract last Thursday, split last season between St. Louis and San Jose, scoring 36 goals and 56 points in 77 regular season games.
The 6-foot-2, 210-pounder has tallied 364 goals, 719 points and 1,439 penalty minutes in 1,026 NHL games over 15 seasons with the Devils, Oilers, Bruins, Stars, Blues and Sharks.
