Sabres' match Oilers offer to Vanek
Jul 6, 2007, 17:15 GMT
Edmonton, AB - The Edmonton Oilers signed restricted free agent forward Thomas Vanek to an offer sheet on Friday and the Buffalo Sabres wasted little time in matching it.
The deal was for seven years and $50 million.
Vanek tallied 43 goals last season with Buffalo and became the first Sabres player since Miroslav Satan in 1998-99 to score more than 40 in a season.
In two seasons with the Sabres, Vanek has 68 goals and 64 assists in 163 career games. He has also recorded eight goals and four assists in 26 career playoff games.
If the Sabres chose to let Vanek walk, Buffalo would have received four first round picks as compensation.
