St. Louis, MO - Tomas Holmstrom scored two goals to lead the
Detroit Red Wings to a 3-2 victory over the St. Louis Blues at Scottrade
Center.
Valtteri Filppula scored his first career goal for the Red Wings, who have won
their last three games.
Chris Osgood stopped 28 shots for Detroit, which has won five straight and 11
of its last 12 games against St. Louis.
Bill Guerin and Radek Dvorak each had a goal and Manny Legace, facing his
former team for the first time, stopped 22 shots for the Blues, who have
dropped three of their last four contests.
The Red Wings took a 2-0 lead in the first period with goals separated by
1:59.
Pavel Datsyuk skated into the zone and left a drop pass for Holmstrom, who
snapped a wrister from the left point that went into the right corner of the
net at the 4:33 mark.
Filppula scored his first career NHL goal at the 6:32 mark when he cut out
front and flicked a backhander over the glove of Legace to give Detroit the
two-goal cushion heading into the second period.
The Blues got on the board in the second period as Christian Backman had the
puck at the left boards and fed it to Guerin at the left circle. Guerin then
snapped a shot between the pads of Osgood to make it a 2-1 game with 6:25
left in the second.
Holmstrom, though, gave his club a 3-1 lead when he banged down a point shot
from Jason Williams and smacked the puck into the net 6:34 into the third.
The goal proved to be the game-winner as Dvorak's shorthanded breakaway goal
made it a 3-2 game with 3:26 to play.
Osgood, though, stopped several shots over the final three-plus minutes to
preserve the win.
