Atlanta, GA - Morten Andersen, the 47-year old placekicker who is the NFL's all-time leading scorer, signed a contract with the Atlanta Falcons Monday night.
The Falcons made a move to use Andersen instead of Matt Prater, who was waived after making 1-of-4 field goal tries in the first two weeks. That includes misses in both his attempts in a 13-7 loss at Jacksonville Sunday. He hooked a 26-yarder in the third quarter, failing to extend a 7-3 Atlanta lead.
Andersen, who is entering his 25th season in the league, has recorded 2,445 career points and is the Falcons career scoring leader with 707 points (1995-2000, 2006). This will be his third stint with Atlanta.
Andersen has made 540-of-681 career field goal attempts. In Week 14 of the 2006 season, the 'Great Dane' became the NFL's all-time leading scorer when his extra point kick sailed through the uprights in front of a home crowd against the Dallas Cowboys. Andersen made 20-of-23 field goal tries for the Falcons last season.
In one of the biggest moments in Falcons history, Andersen booted a 38-yard field goal against the Minnesota Vikings in the 1999 NFC Championship game to send Atlanta to its first Super Bowl appearance in franchise history.
