Miami, FL - The Miami Dolphins placed starting safety Yeremiah Bell on injured reserve Tuesday, and signed veteran safety Donovan Darius as a replacement.
Bell suffered a left Achilles tendon tear in the third quarter of the team's 16-13 overtime loss to the Washington Redskins Sunday. He was coming off a 2006 season in which he started the final eight games and finished with 65 tackles, two sacks, two forced fumbles, two fumble recoveries and a team-high 12 passes defensed.
Darius, 32, is a veteran of nine NFL seasons who entered the league as a first-round draft choice of Jacksonville in 1998. He signed with Oakland as a free agent on July 10 before being released on September 2.
In his career, all with the Jaguars, Darius has started all 115 games in which he has played, and has totaled 858 tackles, two sacks, 14 interceptions and 35 passes defensed.
The Dolphins also waived defensive end Akbar Gbaja-Biamila, signed safety Lamont Thompson and signed linebacker Kelvin Smith to the practice squad.
