Redskins Cut Wynn, Jimoh, 21 Others
Sep 2, 2007, 6:23 GMT
Ashburn, VA - Defensive end Renaldo Wynn and safety Ade Jimoh were among the highest-profile players released by the Washington Redskins on Saturday, as Joe Gibbs' club reduced its roster to the 53-man maximum.
Wynn had been with the Redskins since the 2002 season, playing in 79 of the club's 80 regular season games over that span and starting 64. But Wynn had lost his starting job prior to last season, when the team acquired free agent end Andre Carter, and the soon-to-be 33-year-old was deemed expendable by the club.
Jimoh had played in 63 of a possible 64 regular season contests since arriving in Washington as an undrafted free agent prior to 2003, forging a reputation as valued special-teams player over that span. Jimoh, a backup defensive back, was credited with 18 tackles during the 2006 campaign.
Also released on Saturday were tackle Calvin Armstrong, defensive lineman Matthias Askew, fullback Fred Beasley, tight end Brian Bell, wide receiver Carl Berman, wide receiver Corey Bradford, running back Dee Brown, defensive end Alex Buzbee, cornerback John Eubanks, defensive end Justin Hickman, wide receiver Ryan Hoag, offensive lineman Kili Lefotu, tight end Jake Nordin, quarterback Jordan Palmer, linebacker Dallas Sartz, linebacker Matt Sinclair safety Omar Stoutmire, wide receiver Burl Toler, linebacker Anthony Trucks defensive back Byron Westbrook, and offensive lineman Taylor Whitley.
Among the notables in that group were Bradford, the former Lion, Texan, and Packer; Palmer and Sartz, a pair of 2007 Draft picks; Stoutmire, who appeared in 13 games with the Saints last season; and Westbrook, the brother of Philadelphia Eagles running back Brian Westbrook.
The Redskins will open their season on Sept. 9 against the Miami Dolphins at FedEx Field.
