Raiders Cut Crockett, Darius, Among 21 Moves
Sep 2, 2007, 3:39 GMT
Alameda, CA - Veteran fullback Zack Crockett and safety Donovin Darius were among the 20 players cut by the Oakland Raiders on Saturday, as the Silver and Black reduced their roster to the league-mandated maximum of 53.
The 34-year-old Crockett will depart Oakland after spending eight years as a Raider. The veteran fullback did not miss a single game between 2000 and 2006, scoring a total of 36 touchdowns in his tenure with the team. Crockett's spot on the roster was taken by ex-Falcons fullback Justin Griffith, who was obtained during the offseason.
Darius was looking to make the roster after being released by the Jacksonville Jaguars early in training camp. The 32-year-old strong safety, a fixture in the Jacksonville lineup, had been slowed by injuries in recent seasons and was not quick to recover after coming over to Oakland.
Also released on Saturday were tight end James Adkisson, center Jesse Boone, guard Kevin Boothe, linebacker Kurt Campbell, defensive back Marquice Cole, safety Eric Frampton, wide receiver Carlos Francis, punter/kicker Tyler Fredrickson, defensive tackle Anttaj Hawthorne, wide receiver Chris McFoy, defensive end Quentin Moses, tight end O.J. Santiago, defensive tackle Josh Shaw, linebacker Kyle Shotwell, tackle Chad Slaughter, defensive tackle Dave Tollefson, wide receiver Alvis Whitted, and tackle Mark Wilson.
Notables among that group include Boothe, a 14-game starter last season; Hawthorne, who played in all 16 games with Oakland in 2006; Moses, a third- round draft pick in 2007; Slaughter, who opened six games for the Silver and Black last season; and Whitted, a 13-game starter last season who played 66 contests with Oakland from 2002 through 2006.
In another move Saturday, Oakland moved fourth-round draft pick Michael Bush (Louisville) to the Reserve/Non-Football Injury (NFI) list due to a broken leg suffered during his final collegiate season. Bush will not be eligible to return until after Oakland's sixth game.
The Raiders will begin the regular season on Sept. 9, when they host the Detroit Lions.
