Santa Clara, CA - Rookies Jay Moore and Joe Cohen were placed on season-ending injured reserve on Saturday, while 13 of their fellow San Francisco 49ers were released as Mike Nolan's club trimmed its roster to the 53-player maximum.
Moore (Nebraska) and Cohen (Florida), a pair of fourth-round selections in the 2007 Draft, were both injured in the Niners' preseason finale against San Diego on Thursday. Moore, an outside linebacker, suffered an ankle injury, while Cohen, a defensive lineman, tore his right anterior cruciate ligament.
The 49ers also waived the following players on Saturday: safety Darnell Bing, linebacker Colby Bockwoldt, running back Thomas Clayton, tackle Harvey Dahl, tackle Damane Duckett, wide receiver Bryan Gilmore, tight end Zac Herold, tight end Zachery Hilton, fullback Zak Keasey, defensive end Sam Rayburn, safety Vickiel Vaughn, linebacker Mark Washington, and tackle Tavares Washington.
Of that group, notables include Bockwoldt, a one-time starter with the Saints and Titans; Gilmore, who played in all 16 games with three starts for San Francisco last season; Hilton, who caught 35 passes with the Saints in 2005; Rayburn, a regular with the Eagles from 2003 through 2006; and Clayton, the Niners' sixth-round pick in the 2007 Draft.
On Friday, the Niners waived defensive end Zack Anderson, cornerback Markus Curry, guard Sean Estrada, quarterback Luke Getsy, safety Jake Patten, defensive end Darius Sanders, and running back Arkee Whitlock.
The 49ers will begin the regular season on Monday, Sept. 10, when they play host to the Arizona Cardinals.
