Packers top new-look Steelers
Aug 12, 2007, 3:40 GMT
Pittsburgh, PA - Aaron Rodgers produced the Packers' only touchdown and led a pair of scoring drives, as Green Bay topped Pittsburgh, 13-9, to spoil Mike Tomlin's home debut in preseason action.
Rodgers finished 18-for-27 for 168 yards after Brett Favre played the first four series' and ended 2-for-7 for seven yards on the night.
Starter Ben Roethlisberger also saw limited action for Pittsburgh, completing both of his passes for 14 yards in two series. He also fumbled on a third-and- five play from Green Bay's 36 on the opening drive after being stripped of the ball by Cullen Jenkins.
Backup Charlie Batch went 3-for-5 for 97 yards and a touchdown for the Steelers, while Brian St. Pierre finished 10-for-23 for 99 yards.
Tomlin, the former Minnesota Vikings defensive coordinator, was working the Heinz Field sideline for the first time. He made his preseason debut in a 20-7 win over the New Orleans Saints in the Hall of Fame Game from Canton, Ohio last Sunday.
Walter Young scored the game's first points, as he hauled in a 41-yard pass from Batch late in the first quarter. Jeff Reed's extra point attempt was blocked, however, to keep it at 6-0.
Reed split the uprights with a 27-yard field goal in the second stanza to make it 9-0, but Green Bay countered with a 32-yarder by Dave Rayner to close out the first half.
The third quarter belonged to the Packers, who forged ahead 10-9 on Rodgers' three-yard scoring toss to Carlyle Holiday.
Mason Crosby then booted a 52-yard field goal with 3:25 left in the stanza to cap an eight-play, 57-yard drive.
Green Bay was making its first-ever appearance at Heinz Field, having not played in Pittsburgh since a 1998 trip to Three Rivers Stadium. Packers coach Mike McCarthy, a native of Pittsburgh, returned home for the first time as an NFL head coach and left with a victory in his team's preseason debut.
