Nov 18, 2006, 0:55 GMT
Philadelphia, PA - Former Philadelphia Eagles running back/defensive back Jack Hinkle passed away on Friday at his home in Norristown, Pennsylvania due to natural causes. He was 89.
Hinkle rushed for 1,067 yards and five touchdowns in six seasons with the Eagles (1941, 1943-47).
In 1943, World War II took most of the league's players, forcing the Steelers and Eagles to merge for one season into a team known as the 'Steagles.' Despite the circumstances, Hinkle enjoyed his best season, rushing for a team- leading 571 yards and three touchdowns, while also intercepting four passes as a defensive back.
Hinkle, a graduate of Syracuse, is survived by his wife, their children and grandchildren.
