Jurgen Klinsmann believes germany can win the confederations cup

By Peter Donkor Jun 13, 2005, 0:33 GMT

Jurgen Klinsmaan who is the manager of Germany’s national soccer team has high expectations in this summer’s Confederations Cup to take place from 15th to 29th June. He hopes they win the cup which will be played in his native Germany ‘to show the world how far Germany has come especially after re-unification’.

Jurgen Klinsmann, a World and European Cup winner in 1990 and 1996 respectively as a player for West Germany and Germany told DW-tv that his team had great potential and could win the Confederations Cup and follow it up with the much coveted World Cup next summer also due to take place in Germany.

Germany drawn in Group A with Argentina, Australia and Tunisia, will have a duty to get things right on the field, with the onus on Klinsmann to show fans that a home triumph next year is possible.

Group B consists of Greece, Mexico, Brazil and Japan who secured a place in their third consecutive World Cup finals with a 2-0 win over North Korea on Wednesday.

Klinsmann also revealed that the German team had improved considerably in fitness after hiring a fitness expert from the United States. He said that his players were ready to fight harder when playing for Germany.

Klinsmann also believes that German football is still highly respected despite the match-fixing scandal that rocked it recently and the inability of German Clubs to go far in the European club competitions.

Busy month for Tunisia's Carthage Eagles

Tunisia's football team, the Carthage Eagles, hope to make June more than just another busy and decisive month for their fans.
For starters, the Eagles are set to play important qualifiers for the joint 2006 World Cup/African Nations Cup.
With eleven points, reigning African champions are second in their group five after beating their hosts Botswana 3-1 in Gaborone on 4 June, and will meet Guinea at home on 11 June.
The two matches will determine whether Tunisia will play in its third World Cup in a row, after having qualified for France 1998 and Korea/Japan 2002.
Before they get there, however, the Tunisians will have an excellent opportunity to test their strength against some of the best teams in the world, which will be competing in the 2005 FIFA Confederations Cup in Germany. The tournament kicks off in 15 June.
The Eagles team are in the same group with the hosts Germany, Argentina and Australia, while Brazil, Greece, Japan, and Mexico form the second group of the tournament.
Tunisian players and their coach, Roger Lemerre, are not promising anything, however.
'We are going there to test our resources. Logic says that Argentina and Germany should be able to defeat us but who knows?' Lemerre said.
The Frenchman has spruced up his team for the June competitions by including players who were born in France but opted to play for their ancestral homeland.
Hamed Namouchi (playing for Scotland's Glasgow Rangers) and Chaouki Ben Saada (a member of France's Bastia and former player in the French Under-17 national side) have already joined the team.
Nabil Taider, a 21-year-old midfielder with the French club Toulouse, who also has four caps with the French Under-21 national team, will be the next addition to Lemerre's lineup as he has just been granted permission from FIFA to switch national jerseys.
Two other brilliant players are expected to serve as the backbone of this mostly young and inexperienced team.
These are Francileudo dos Santos, Africa's second most prolific scorer, and Selim Benachour, who plays for Paris Saint-Germain in the French Premier League.
