Saturday night fight: De La Hoya v Pacquiao

Oscar and Manny, from DirecTV

Saturday night's alright for fighting, get a little action in, live from the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.  The biggest fight of 2008 goes down this Saturday when Oscar De La Hoya, the sport’s biggest star, faces Manny Pacquiao, reportedly the sport’s pound-for-pound best.

The Ameri-Mexinator versus the Pacman will be on PPV DirecTV at 9 pm ET 6 pm PT this Saturday.

This one is epic first time battle. Ten-time world champion Oscar “The Golden Boy” De La Hoya and five-division world champion Manny “Pacman” Pacquiao will collide in the welterweight showdown that fight fans have been dreaming about.

Oscar De La Hoya

Age: 35
Nickname: Golden Boy
Height: 5'10 ½"
Stance: Orthodox
Reach: 72"
Nationality: Mexican-American
Record: 39-5-0, 30 KOs
Trainer: Ignacio “Nacho” Beristain

Manny Pacquiao

Age: 29
Nickname: Pacman   (My favorite is "the Mexicutioner")
Height: 5'6 ½"
Stance: Southpaw
Reach: 67"
Nationality: Filipino
Record: 47-3-2, 35 KOs
Trainer: Freddie Roach

The match will see southpaw Manny Pacquiao (47-3-2; 35 KOs) and Oscar De La Hoya (39-5; 30 KOs) meet at the 147-pound welterweight limit.

A David And Goliath tale? Look at the size difference:

Pacquiao is a full four inches shorter than Oscar, and near 15 pounds lighter than the 35-year-old Golden Boy De La Hoya.

He also destroyed three Mexican future Hall of Famers: Juan Manuel Márquez, Marco Antonio Barrera and Erik Morales in past fights.

There is some history and sour feelings between Pacquiao's trainer, Freddie Roach, and De La Hoya, once a disciple.

Roach was De La Hoya's trainer against Floyd Mayweather, which broke all pay-per-view records.  Oscar publicly noted in past interviews that his problem was that his trainer "didn't have a game plan."

"Oscar," said Roach, "always finds someone else to blame. We had a perfect game plan against Mayweather and it was working, but he didn't carry it out."

For the Pacquiao fans, his victory would create one of the most competitive fight landscapes in boxing - a possible Pacquiao/Mayweather bout.

Tell us who you think will win.
