Sonics' McClendon fined $250K

Seattle, WA - The NBA reportedly fined Seattle SuperSonics minority partner Aubrey McClendon for comments he made last week about the team possibly moving to Oklahoma City.According to the Seattle Times, a league spokesman confirmed that McClendon was fined a hefty $250,000 for comments he made to the Oklahoma City Journal.'We didn't buy the team to keep it in Seattle, we hoped to come here,' McClendon told the newspaper. 'We know it's a little more difficult financially here in Oklahoma City, but we think it's great for the community and if we could break even we'd be thrilled.'Sonics majority owner Clay Bennett released a statement refuting McClendon on August 13. But, the Sonics ownership group has set an October 31 deadline to reach an agreement on a new arena in the Seattle area.If nothing is worked out by that time, Bennett has said he will petition the NBA to move the Sonics and the WNBA's Seattle Storm, likely to Oklahoma City.© 2007 The Sports Network
