Swisher charges Padilla, sets off brawl in A's/Rangers game

Oakland, CA - Sunday's game between the Oakland Athletics and the Texas Rangers got off to an interesting start, with Rangers starter Vicente Padilla beaning Oakland's Nick Swisher in the first inning, setting off a benches-clearing brawl.Swisher, apparently incensed after being plunked by Texas reliever Bill White in Saturday's game, charged the mound and tackled Padilla after taking a 3-2 fastball to the ribs. Padilla swung his fist at Swisher, but whiffed on the punch as the benches emptied.Padilla and Swisher were both ejected, but A's third baseman Jack Hannahan, who dove headfirst into the pile, somehow escaped getting tossed.Padilla was replaced by Jamey Wright, while Kevin Thompson came in for Swisher.© 2007 The Sports Network
