Philadelphia, PA - The Philadelphia Phillies have penciled in All-Star left-hander Cole Hamels for Tuesday's start against St. Louis.
Hamels, who has been on the disabled list since August 17 with a left elbow strain, experienced discomfort during a bullpen session on August 31. There were no problems Saturday, however, as Hamels returned to the 'pen for a two- inning simulation.
Hamels threw 55 pitches, mixing an array of off-speed stuff around his fastball while facing stand-in Chris Roberson. Hamels reported no problems and pronounced himself ready to lead Philadelphia in its push for the playoffs.
The Phillies, who rallied to their third straight win - and seventh straight versus New York - on Saturday, moved within 4 1/2 games of the Mets in the division race and remained 1 1/2 games behind the Padres in the wild card race. San Diego beat San Francisco, 6-0, on Saturday night.
Hamels (14-5) has pitched 167 1/3 frames this season, striking out 156 batters and posting a 3.50 earned run average. The southpaw last pitched on August 16 against Washington, winning the game with 6 2/3 scoreless frames.
The Phillies have rotated between Adam Eaton and J.D. Durbin in Hamels' absence.
