Redman, Burres key O's victory over Jays

Sep 15, 2007, 2:22 GMT

Toronto, ON - Tike Redman went 3-for-5 with an RBI and a pair of runs scored as Baltimore topped Toronto, 6-2, in the opener of a three-game set at Rogers Centre.

Aubrey Huff went 2-for-4 with an RBI and run scored, and Brian Roberts hit his 11th home run of the season for the Orioles, who have won two straight. Nick Markakis added two hits, an RBI and scored once, and Ramon Hernandez also drove in a run.

Brian Burres (6-5) hurled seven shutout innings, allowing eight hits and fanning four without a walk. It was the young left-hander's first win since July 28.

Jays hurler Jesse Litsch (5-9) yielded seven hits and four runs over three innings in the loss, his third loss in as many starts.

Aaron Hill went 2-for-4 with a double and a homer for the Blue Jays, who have lost six of seven. Hector Luna also homered, and both Vernon Wells and Reed Johnson had two hits in defeat.

Baltimore dented Litsch for a pair of runs in the first. Redman doubled with one out and moved to third on Markakis' single. Miguel Tejada was hit by a pitch to load the bases, and Litsch uncorked a wild pitch with Kevin Millar at the plate to score Redman. After Millar fanned, Huff beat out an infield single to score Markakis, but Hernandez fanned looking to keep the damage to two runs.

Roberts' two-out solo shot to right put the O's up 3-0 in the second, and it was 4-0 in the third when Huff tripled with two outs and scored on a Hernandez base hit.

Burres received defensive help in the fifth, as the Jays had two men on with one out. However, Alex Rios lined to short left and Jay Payton ran all the way to tag second and complete the unassisted double play.

From there, Burres allowed one hit in the next two innings. Jim Hoey took over in the eighth and worked a 1-2-3 frame to keep the Jays scoreless.

In the ninth, a pair of RBI doubles by Redman and Markakis boosted Baltimore's lead to 6-0. Hill's 16th homer of the season in the home half finally put the Jays on the board, and Luna's first longball of the season made it 6-2, but Jamie Walker finished out on the mound to nail down the win.
