Nationals' Patterson undergoes arm surgery

Washington, DC - Washington pitcher John Patterson Friday underwent surgery to decompress the radial nerve in his right arm.Dr. David Ruch performed the procedure in one hour at Duke Medical Center.Patterson, who missed most of last season after forearm surgery, left with biceps soreness in the third inning of a 5-3 loss to the Chicago Cubs on May 5. In seven starts this season, Patterson is 1-5 with a 7.47 earned run average.Washington also made two other pitching-staff moves on Friday.Fellow Nats right-hander Tim Redding, who with a right elbow contusion has not pitched in a game since September 5 against Florida, participated in a bullpen session.And, reliever Micah Bowie was placed on the 60-day disabled list with a sports hernia. Slated to undergo surgery in St. Louis, he is out for the season.Also, the club acquired outfielder/first baseman Andrew Lefave from Milwaukee to complete the September 4 trade in which the Brewers acquired pitcher Ray King.© 2007 The Sports Network
