Loney, Dodgers down slumping Padres
Sep 14, 2007, 4:56 GMT
Los Angeles, CA - James Loney went 3-for-4 with four RBI to lift the Los Angeles Dodgers over the San Diego Padres, 6-3, in the finale of a three-game series at Chavez Ravine.
Former Padre David Wells (8-8) got the better of his old club, picking up the win after tossing six innings of three-run, four-hit ball. Wells, who went 5-8 with a 5.54 earned run average in 22 games with the Padres before being placed on waivers, is unbeaten in his last four outings (3-0).
'This was personal satisfaction for me against the Padres,' Wells said. 'You always want to prove to a team that released you wrong. They gave up on me. I never gave up on myself.'
LA now trails San Diego by just 1 1/2 games for the wild card lead.
Greg Maddux (12-10) yielded six runs on 10 hits over 3 1/3 innings for the Padres, who have lost six of eight. Maddux was 5-0 in his previous six trips to the mound.
Mike Cameron and Morgan Ensberg both homered in defeat.
The Dodgers went up 1-0 in the first, as Rafael Furcal led off with a single, stole second, then came in a batter later on Loney's double to right.
The home team added three runs in the third to up the advantage to 4-0. With runners on second and third and one out, Loney came through with a base hit that scored both Furcal and Juan Pierre. Jeff Kent and Luis Gonzalez followed with consecutive singles that brought another run in.
Maddux was chased from the game after Wells hit a one-out single in the fourth, putting runners on the corners. With Kevin Cameron on in replacement, Furcal put down a bunt that brought in Matt Kemp. Furcal then stole second and third before Loney singled him in for a 6-0 lead.
'He had a couple of big hits tonight, but what he did on the mound is what we were looking for,' said LA manager Grady Little of Wells. 'He knows how to make a pitch when he needs to.'
The Padres used the long ball in the sixth to slice their deficit in half. Josh Bard started the inning with a base hit before Ensberg stepped in as a pinch hitter and belted one over the center-field wall. Cameron added a solo shot, his 20th home run of the season.
