Feliz lifts Giants over Diamondbacks
Sep 12, 2007, 5:23 GMT
San Francisco, CA - Pedro Feliz drove in the winning run in the bottom of the eighth inning to lift the San Francisco Giants to a 2-1 win over the Arizona Diamondbacks at AT&T Park.
Nate Schierholtz notched the other RBI for the Giants, who evened this three- game series and won for the fourth time in their last six games overall. Kevin Correia started on the hill and tossed 5 1/3 innings of one-run, six-hit ball with four strikeouts.
Chris Young's 30th home run of the season accounted for the lone Arizona run. Young is now tied with Ryan Braun of Milwaukee for the lead in HRs among rookies in 2007.
The Diamondbacks, who saw their six-game win streak halted, also saw their lead atop the NL West fall to 2 1/2 games after San Diego's win over the Dodgers on Tuesday.
With the score even at 1-1, the Giants came to bat in the bottom of the eighth inning. Dan Ortmeier ripped a leadoff triple off of Bob Wickman (3-4) and crossed the plate when Feliz flied out to left field.
'On the leadoff triple, I tried to go the other way with it and left it over the plate,' said Wickman. 'It's a big ballpark -- anything can happen here.'
Brian Wilson allowed a leadoff single in the top of the ninth, but Young grounded out and Justin Upton ended it after he grounded into Arizona's third double play of the game.
Wilson earned his third save of the season.
Ed Gonzalez allowed one run on only three hits over six strong innings for Arizona.
Young's two-out blast in the top of the fourth preceded a San Francisco run in the bottom of the frame that quickly tied the score.
Rajai Davis stroked a leadoff single and scored when Schierholtz followed with a double to left field.
The D-Backs had a chance to score in the fifth, but couldn't bring home Chris Snyder from third base. Snyder doubled leading off and was bunted to third, but a pair of groundouts by Emilio Bonifacio and Stephen Drew ended the frame.
'We had a runner on third and less than two outs and we couldn't get him in,' said Arizona manager Bob Melvin. 'That's the game right there.'
Again in the sixth, the visitors had a chance to score. With Eric Byrnes on first, consecutive one-out walks to Mark Reynolds and Young loaded the bases but Giants reliever Scott Munter induced a 6-4-3 double play.
Dan Giese tossed a 1-2-3 seventh for the Giants and Tyler Walker (2-0) induced another one-out, inning-ending double play in the top of the eighth to keep the score 1-1.
