Jacobs, Marlins down Nationals
Sep 12, 2007, 2:54 GMT
Miami, FL - Mike Jacobs went 3-for-3 with a two-run home run and five RBI as the Florida Marlins downed the Washington Nationals, 13-8, in the second of a three-game set at Dolphin Stadium.
Hanley Ramirez went 4-for-5 with a pair of solo home runs and three runs scored while Miguel Cabrera had three hits, two RBI and two runs scored for the Marlins, who had lost six of seven coming into the game.
Chris Seddon started on the mound, but was roughed up for seven runs on eight hits in just three-plus innings of work. Matt Lindstrom (3-4) got the win for giving up one run on two hits in one inning of action.
Justin Maxwell hit a grand slam on his first career hit while Wily Mo Pena went 2-for-4 with two RBI and two runs scored for the Nationals, who had won seven of their last nine games.
Mike Bacsik was beat up for five runs on eight hits in just 2 2/3 innings.
'You hope you can make the adjustment but tonight I never made an adjustment,' said Bacsik. 'I threw the ball either right down the middle or a foot outside.'
Chris Schroder (2-2) was handed the loss for allowing two runs in one-plus innings of work.
With the game tied heading into the bottom of the seventh, Florida took the lead in the frame. With runners on first and third and no outs, Cabrera punched a single to right-center to plate Dan Uggla. Jacobs later hit a double to left-center to score Cabrera and Josh Willingham for an 11-8 advantage.
The Marlins gave themselves some insurance in the eighth as Ramirez hit a solo home run over the left field wall and Cabrera's infield single scored Uggla for a 13-8 lead.
The Marlins grabbed a 1-0 lead in the first inning on a Ramirez home run that wound up in the upper deck in left field.
The Nationals gained the lead in the second. Austin Kearns hit a one-out double and Pena brought him home with a single. Pena moved to second on the play, then stole third and came home on a sacrifice fly from Ronnie Belliard.
Florida tied the game in the second when Uggla hit into a fielder's choice that scored Paul Hoover to make it a 2-2 game.
Florida then regained the lead in the third with three runs. Willingham hit a one-out single and Jacobs followed with a home run over the right field wall. Cody Ross then followed with a home run for a 5-2 lead.
Washington, though, bounced back in the fourth to retake the lead. Kearns led off with a double and Pena brought him home when he followed with a single. After Belliard hit a ground-rule double and Brian Schneider drew a walk to load the bases, Maxwell stepped in to pinch-hit and delivered as he put the ball over the left field wall for a grand slam and a 7-5 lead.
'Coming off the bench you just want to help the team any way you can because you're only going to get one opportunity,' said Maxwell. 'So to have us take the lead at the time was pretty cool. When I hit first base I didn't know if I was going to pass (base-runner) Brian Schneider because he didn't know if it was going to get out, so he was like 'Get off of me!''
Florida chipped away at the lead in the fourth on an RBI single from Jacobs that scored Cabrera.
The Marlins took an 8-7 lead in the fifth with a pair of runs. Ramirez tied the game when he scored on a passed ball and Willingham gave the team the lead later in the inning on an RBI single to plate Uggla.
However, Washington tied the contest in the seventh on a double from Dmitri Young that plated Ryan Zimmerman.
