Morales strong as Rockies down Phils
Sep 12, 2007, 2:47 GMT
Philadelphia, PA - Franklin Morales dazzled through five frames and received plenty of support from Colorado's big bats, as the Rockies erased the memories of Monday's late collapse and pounded the Phillies, 8-2, at Citizens Bank Park.
The Rockies looked on their way to a victory in the initial game of the series, leading 5-2 before Pat Burrell launched a three-run home run off the facing of the left-field upper deck in the seventh frame. Ryan Howard's double to left scored Chase Utley with the running win the 10th.
Colorado built another large lead Tuesday, this time a big enough one to cruise against Adam Eaton (9-9), who again was hit around to the tune of four runs on six hits with two walks and six strikeouts over five-plus frames.
'We didn't hit,' said manager Charlie Manuel. 'It is hard to win if we can't score. They (Rockies) kept adding on. We couldn't catch them.'
The right-hander was a victim of the long ball, yielding all of his runs on three home runs, solo shots by Troy Tulowitzki and Todd Helton in the first and fourth frames before Matt Holliday's two-run shot in the sixth. Holliday hit a solo homer on the line out to left in the ninth to complete the scoring.
Philadelphia saw its three-game win streak come to an end, and Colorado has now alternated wins and losses in its last six games.
Colorado added two more runs in the sixth frame with Yorvit Torrealba's run- scoring base hit and Joe Koshansky's sacrifice fly to left. Helton finished 3- for-4 with two runs scored and Garrett Atkins was 2-for-4 with a run scored and an RBI.
Morales (1-2), dominant entering the game against left-handed hitters, kept Utley and Howard in check, surrendering only three hits with one walk and four strikeouts to pick up his first big-league win.
Jimmy Rollins hit his 27th home run out to left in the eighth frame then Clint Barmes' throwing error allowed Utley to cross the plate later in the inning. The Rockies took a 7-0 lead an inning earlier when Holliday was plunked by a pitch, stole second and scored on Atkins' double.
