Teixeira earns NL monthly honor

New York, NY - Mark Teixeira of the Atlanta Braves was named NL Player of the Month for August on Tuesday.
The powerful switch-hitter batted .315 with a league-leading 32 RBI, posting 13 multi-hit games and placing second in the NL in home runs with 10. The 27- year-old slugger put together back-to-back multi-home run games on August 19 against Arizona and August 20 against Cincinnati.
Teixeira made a splash in his National League debut August 1 following his acquisition from the Texas Rangers, homering and driving in four runs against Houston.
Other players considered for the award were New York's David Wright (.394, 6 HR, 21 RBI); Houston's Lance Berkman (.345, 9 HR, 20 RBI); Philadelphia's Jayson Werth (.414, 3 HR, 19 RBI) and Cincinnati's Jeff Keppinger (.393, 3 HR, 12 RBI).
Teixeira previously won AL Player of the Month honors for July, 2004 with Texas.
In addition, Colorado Rockies shortstop Troy Tulowitzki earned NL Rookie of the Month while San Diego Padres starter Jake Peavy was named NL Pitcher of the Month.
