Elbow injury sidelines Guardado for remainder of season

Cincinnati, OH - The Cincinnati Reds transferred closer Eddie Guardado from the 15-day disabled list to the 60-day DL on Wednesday when an MRI revealed that Guardado was suffering from a torn ulnar collateral ligament.The injury will sideline the left-hander for the remainder of the season, and will likely require Tommy John surgery to repair the ligament, which would carry a rehabilitation period that could take up to a year.The 35-year-old Guardado has converted eight of 10 save chances since coming over from Seattle in early July. The southpaw has a 1.29 earned run average in 15 appearances with the Reds.For his career, Guardado owns a 41-55 record with a 4.26 ERA. He has notched 183 saves in 781 appearances spanning 836 1/3 innings with Minnesota, Seattle and the Reds.In a corresponding roster move, the club recalled pitcher Jason Johnson from Triple-A Louisville.© 2006 The Sports Network
