Chicago, IL - Mark Teahen plated the game-winning run with a
two-run home run in the sixth inning as the Kansas City Royals held on to
defeat the Chicago White Sox, 4-2, in the second contest of a four-game series
at U.S. Cellular Field.
Emil Brown went 2-for-4 with a homer and Mark Grudzielanek had two hits and
scored a run for the Royals, who snapped a five-game skid. Runelvys Hernandez
(3-7) earned the win after giving up two runs on eight hits with three walks
and five strikeouts over 7 2/3 innings of work.
'He was outstanding,' Kansas City manager Buddy Bell said. 'He had great
command of his off-speed stuff. I think he really established the way the game
was going to go. He really dictated how the game went.'
Tadahito Iguchi had two hits and drove in a run and Scott Podsednik had a hit
and an RBI for the White Sox, who had a five-game winning streak halted.
Javier Vazquez (11-7) was saddled with the loss after surrendering four runs
-- three earned -- on seven hits with a strikeout over 5 1/3 innings pitched
for Chicago.
'I think Hernandez set the tone tonight,' White Sox manager Ozzie Guillen
said. 'The kid came out throwing strikes. They also played good defense behind
him. They played good tonight. We didn't, necessarily.'
Tied 2-2 in the sixth, the Royals regained a two-run lead after Grudzielanek
led off with a single and Teahen followed with a two-run home run to center to
give Kansas City a 4-2 margin.
Kansas City got on the scoreboard in the top of the second on a Brown one-
out homer to right. In the fifth, the Royals made it 2-0 after Ryan
Shealy singled with one out and advanced to second on a wild pitch before
scoring after Angel Berroa reached on a fielding error.
Chicago tied the contest in the home half of the fifth. Uribe singled and
Brian Anderson hit a ground-rule double before Podsednik lofted a sacrifice
fly that plated Uribe. Iguchi then singled home Anderson to make it 2-2.
The White Sox brought the tying run to the plate with one on and two out in
the eighth, but reliever Ambiorix Burgos got Paul Konerko to fly out to end
the threat. In the ninth, Joe Nelson set Chicago down in order to record his
first save of the season.
