Winston-Salem, NC - Wake Forest sophomore guard Anthony Gurley, a Boston native, has transferred to UMass, both schools announced on Wednesday.

'I am very saddened to not attend Wake Forest,' said Gurley. 'I am dealing with a personal situation and it is in my best interests to leave the university at this time. I have loved being a part of the Deacon basketball team and I wish to thank my teammates and coaches for allowing me to be a part of something very special. This is clearly the most difficult decision I have ever had to make in my life.'

Gurley, a 6-foot-3 guard, averaged 6.4 points and 1.6 rebounds in 31 appearances as a freshman last season. Gurley will be a walk-on at UMass after enrolling in the school. He will sit out the 2007-08 season as a redshirt transfer, but can practice with the team. He will have three years of eligibility beginning with the 2008-09 season.

'It is very exciting to have Anthony as a part of our basketball program,' said UMass head coach Travis Ford. 'I know how important and special it is for Anthony to return to his home state and we are equally thrilled to have him as a part of our basketball family at UMass. Anthony has great desire to continue to get better and better. I have heard nothing but positives about him as a young man. This process happened very quickly and we are very excited to welcome him home.'
