Indianapolis, IN - The NCAA Playing Rules Oversight Panel approved the Men's Basketball Rules Committee's proposal to extend the three-point line to 20 feet, nine inches on Friday, a jump of one foot. The rule change will go into effect in the 2008-09 season.

'In recent years, the rules committee has conducted a great deal of research and held many discussions regarding the court markings,' said Rob Halvaks, chair for the panel and senior associate commissioner of the Big West Conference. 'The panel supports this action and hopes it has the committee's intended effect on the game.'

The 19-foot, nine-inch line was implemented for the 1986-87 season.

The Women's Basketball Rules Committee did not vote for a similar change, and will maintain the same 19-foot, nine-inch distance.
