Winston-Salem, NC - Wake Forest men's basketball coach Skip Prosser died Thursday of an apparent heart attack, multiple media sources reported. Prosser was 56 years old.
9News in Cincinnati reported that the former Xavier coach collapsed while jogging Thursday morning and was rushed to Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center, where he died of an apparent heart attack. He left behind a wife and two sons.
With a career mark of 291-146, Prosser is the only coach in NCAA history to lead three different schools to the NCAA Tournament in his first season at the school. Prosser coached one season at Loyola (MD) in 1993-94 before heading to Xavier, where he coached for seven seasons. After leading the Musketeers to five tournament bids during his tenure, Prosser moved to the ACC and Wake Forest in 2001.
There he earned the 2003 ACC coach of the year award, and compiled a 126-68 mark in six seasons with the Demon Deacons.
ACC rival and South Carolina men's basketball coach Dave Odom released a statement on Prosser's death on Thursday.
'I'm in shock - I really don't know what to say. I ate lunch with Skip and a few other coaches yesterday down in Orlando at one of the AAU events. As usual we laughed and talked, exchanging coaching stories and personal experiences about our families, but always the bond of basketball and Wake Forest was the focus of our conversation.
'As a coach and a real friend I will miss him greatly. He touched so many lives including mine.
'No doubt the Wake Forest community will rise and support Skip's family, including Nancy and his two sons, Scott and Mark, as everyone works through these difficult days and the healing process begins.'
